This pamphlet explains to citizens how to improve their personal security and the security of their property and how to work with their neighbors in community crime prevention programs.
Abstract
Readers are advised to stay alert to their surroundings, walk confidently and avoid showing fear, and leaving any situation that feels uncomfortable. They should also follow specific security precautions when on foot, in a vehicle, at home, and when their residence is unoccupied. Guidelines are also provided for teaching children about self-protection and for helping crime victims. Step-by-step instructions are also presented for organizing a community crime prevention effort. Specific actions should include finding out what efforts are already under way, meeting with neighbors to decide what actions to take, working with other community groups as well as police and other government personnel to address specific community problems, and celebrating accomplishments. The National Crime Prevention Council, other national groups, and State crime prevention offices can assist community groups in their efforts. Case examples
