Nearly 90 percent of the cases involved arrests for assault, breach of peace, or disorderly conduct. Over 80 percent of the victims were female and 87 percent of offenders were male; 46 percent of the victims lived with their assailant. Physical force was the most serious weapon used in 72 percent of the incidents; the number of incidents in which serious injury occurred fell by over 6 percent in 1991. Alcohol and/or drugs were involved in nearly half the incidents, 35 percent occurred on Sunday or Monday, and 43 percent occurred between 6:00 pm and midnight. Children were present or directly involved in nearly 45 percent of domestic assaults. In 1991, 21 of Connecticut's 187 reported homicides (11.2 percent) were attributed to domestic violence.
