Judgmental police training is designed to complement hands-on training by giving officers a chance to respond to real scenarios or simulated exercises without jeopardizing anyone's safety.
Abstract
According to experts, judgmental training should cover every aspect of an officer's responsibilities from writing traffic tickets to using deadly force. This training works to develop an officer's discretion so that he can respond to situations that lie in the gray areas of the law. In Houston, judgmental training consists of classroom lectures, small group scenario-playing, and dispatches with a partner that are evaluated by a team of peers. Cadets are placed in increasingly stressful situations so that they can assess their own capabilities, fears, and weaknesses. Training tools used in this type of training include the Firearms Training System, driving simulators, and the Law Enforcement Television Network. Computer and video programs offer training on topics including police liability, ethics, dispatch, and pursuit driving.
