The public and law enforcement alike may envision a future of massive traffic congestion. However, existing and developing technology may create more appealing alternatives. Experts from the law enforcement, transportation, and environmental fields participated in a futures study and suggested 40 technological and other trends for discussion. The top five had to do with the level of research committed to traffic technology development, public support for new technology, law enforcement funds available for traffic technology, number and sophistication of traffic operation centers, and smog regulations. The participants top five probable events were major civil disorder, passage of a law enforcement sales tax, revenue sharing cuts for law enforcement services, restrictions on private vehicle use to comply with smog regulations, and reductions in all government programs.
