VICTIM SERVICES RESOURCE MANUAL FOR PASTORS AND LAY LEADERS

NCJ Number

Date Published
1991
Length
31 pages
Annotation
This manual for pastors and church lay leaders discusses the reported extent of child sexual abuse in the U.S.
Abstract
The manual describes definitions, including nontouching, touching, and violent sexual abuse; the scope of the problem; and the failure of the welfare state to address adequately this crisis, which affects such a large percentage of children. The manual outlines what it perceives to be the Church's failing and responsibilities in terms of preventing child abuse and helping its victims, beginning with adherence to mandatory reporting laws. Some conflicts religious leaders may encounter in complying with these laws include possible breaches of congregant confidentiality, the safety and healing of the victim and family, and the possible consequences of not reporting suspected abuse. Resources listed here are categorized as advocacy, awareness, counselor training, counselor referral, education, homosexuality, in-patient care, intervention, professional groups, ritual abuse, and support groups.
