NAPO supports the Anti-Drug Assault Weapons Limitation Act of 1993 as a necessary measure to curb the proliferation of the powerful weapons that drug dealers favor. The 14 types of assault weapons covered in the bill account for 30 percent of all firearms traced to organized crime, terrorism, and gun trafficking. Similarly, NAPO favors the Brady Bill, which would establish a national 5-day waiting period on all handgun sales transacted through licensed dealers. In terms of provisions to reduce the risk of the spread of bloodborne diseases, including HIV, NAPO is urging the Centers for Disease Control to strengthen regulations in the areas of police training and education, provision of preventive safety equipment, and HIV testing policies. NAPO believes that Congress should pass an omnibus anticrime package to aid law enforcement agencies in their fight against drugs and street crime.
