Following an overview of the crime of rape, including its legal definition and the various types of assaults it includes, and a presentation of current information on the prevalence and incidence of rape, the book discusses the trauma of rape in its clinical manifestations. A cognitive/behavioral model of individual response to rape is presented to illustrate the processes by which diffuse and long-term effects are initiated and maintained. Community influences on rape responses are addressed, followed by a description of the emergence of the rape crisis center movement and the role these centers play in fostering social change and providing empowering services. The final three chapters deal with various aspects of interventions for victims of rape, including two types of individual interventions (single-session debriefing and psychotherapeutic treatment), group treatment techniques, and rape prevention activities.
