This paper presents curriculum standards and teaching strategies for gang-prevention instruction for students in grades K through 12.
Abstract
Curriculum standards for grades K-6 focus on the students' need to understand that behavior stems from feelings and attitudes. Closely allied to this standard is students' need to increase their feelings of self-esteem and to practice relaxation. Another standard specifies that it is important for students to set goals and practice achieving them. Other standards for the K-6 gang curriculum relate to the students' need to know and use good communication skills, develop positive relationships and a positive support group, learn leadership skills, and understand the dangers of involvement in gangs. The curriculum standards for grades 7-12 include the standards for K-6 with the addition of four other standards. First, students must understand the consequences of gang membership. Second, they should learn socially responsible rites and rituals to replace the myths that perpetuate gang membership. Third, they must develop communication skills that will help them resist peer pressure to join gangs. Fourth, students must learn nonviolent alternatives to interpersonal conflict. Accompanying each of the standards are strategies for teachers to use in implementing the standard. 21 publication and audio-visual resources
