Victim organizations are seeking considerable improvements in the way victims are treated, and greater victim participation in the criminal justice system through increased use of victim impact statements and other possible means. Most respondents criticized the media for further victimizing victims, who often give consent but are unaware of the consequences of publicity. The media, the respondents said, tend to sensationalize events, neglect the viewpoint of the victim, and perpetuate myths about sexual abuse. The respondents gave an unfavorable impression of the effectiveness of the Victims of Offenses Act 1987. Some other topics covered in this report are adult pretrial diversion, Family Group Conferences, victim compensation, coroners, the Accident Compensation Scheme, domestic violence, ethnic and gender issues, and the protection and privacy of victims.
