The PPIR has gained in acceptance as another option for judges to consider at sentencing, and the private presentence investigation (PPI) can offer a creative and constructive option for defense attorneys and provide an alternative to the traditional sentencing model. The PPI can help strike a favorable balance between concerns of the court and needs of the offender. After the presentence investigator has researched the various sentencing options available under law, he or she should arrange to meet jointly with both defense and prosecution to ascertain the sentencing recommendation deemed appropriate. The presentence investigator can aid attorneys in their roles as advocate and court officer and ensure the sentencing decision is based on sufficient and accurate information. The PPI's sentencing recommendation provides the court with options that offer a realistic opportunity to correct the offender. The selection of presentence investigators and the development of a sentencing plan are described. 24 references
