The monograph is based on written requests to 55 community corrections agencies for information on current and innovative safety training programs. It identifies the following areas as key in developing a correctional officer safety program: use of force continuum, crisis prevention, physical fitness, soft body armor, arrest, search and seizure, firearms, canine use, offender transport, communications equipment, critical incidents, self-defense, oleoresin capsicum, identification apparel, legal issues, handcuffing, contraband management, urban versus rural issues, and electronic monitoring. A discussion of each of the preceding areas is provided that identifies issues to consider in establishing or evaluating a training program, training resources, and salient training issues. The monograph emphasizes legal issues in safety training, the importance of dynamic versus static training, a total approach to correctional staff safety, training program evaluation, and training program development in response to specific agency needs. 59 references and 2 illustrations
