The analysis focused on findings from Westchester County (N.Y.) in 1970 and also noted results from Boston, Philadelphia, and London, England. Results indicated that all three dimensions (incident characteristics, offense type, and social area attributes) are necessary to account for the distribution of offenses in relatively heterogeneous areas, even when these areas are served by only one police agency. No simple or obvious explanation was found for differences between offenses in the area distribution of incidence characteristics such as race, weapons, or place. Findings indicated the importance of recognizing that the nature of crime varies in some ways among geographic areas, but is uniform across areas with respect to other characteristics.
