This handbook provides both the layperson and the professional with a basic education in family violence, with attention to the needs of battered women.
Abstract
Part I provides the battered women with information on domestic violence. It includes a definition of "battering," a checklist that will help a woman determine whether she is "battered," and a review of some common beliefs about domestic violence. Other topics addressed are why men batter, common effects of repeated abuse, the battered women's syndrome, and guidelines for survival. Part II provides battered women practical advice on recovery from a violent relationship. Some tips are to focus on your own life, stop blaming others for your problems, choose your close friends wisely, remember that you are a valuable human being, reach out to others, make a list of goals and priorities, and remember that happiness does not depend on a relationship. Part III gives advice on building healthy relationships, and Part IV provides information on the effects of marital violence on children. Part V contains information on why men attack their mates, guidelines for the victim's assessment of her safety, and how to evaluate the batterer's prospects for recovery. 18 references and 31 suggested readings
