A self-assessment instrument was administered to 76 women before, immediately after, and 6 months after attending any of 12 selected support groups. The women tended to have low self-esteem, and clinical levels of marital dysfunction and spousal violence, but no more of an external locus of control than normal, and not more traditional attitudes toward marriage and the family. Changes in each individual's responses over time were noted. Participation in the support groups evidently resulted in significant improvements in self-esteem, belonging support, locus of control, less traditional attitudes toward marriage and the family, perceived stress, and marital functioning. Those who lived with their spouses reported unexpected significant decreases in abuse. 2 tables, 39 references
