Specialized police units are discussed.
Abstract
Bike patrols, aviation units, dive teams, motorcycle patrols, and canine teams are discussed. Specific experiences of various police departments are provided regarding the various types of specialized units. Concerning bike patrols, the International Police Mountain Bike Association has developed a standardized training course that covers bicycle handling skills, night operation, maintenance, emergency maneuvers and group riding. The selection and training procedures and equipment of the California State Police Dive Team are described. The motorcycle patrol in the Harris County Sheriff's Department in Houston, Texas is described. Recommendations are provided for any department considering the establishment of a motor patrol unit. Canine units are described generally.
