The most important single effort resulting from the agency's crime-oriented planning approach was the High Impact Anticrime Program, under which LEAA may award up to $160 million to eight major cities over a period of 2-plus years to reduce street crimes and burglaries. The Impact cities are Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Newark, St. Louis, and Portland. They were selected on the basis of size, crime rates, administrative support, and geographic area. Projects include enhanced police patrols, better training and equipment for police, community action programs, court projects, and new programs to rehabilitate juvenile offenders and drug addicts. Other significant programs funded by LEAA focused on criminal justice personnel, police-community relations, crime prevention, the detection and apprehension of criminals, prosecution, courts, juvenile delinquency, corrections and rehabilitation, organized crime, drug abuse, civil disorders, and data systems and statistics.
