Abstract
While the skinhead phenomenon originated in Britain in the 1970's, and skinheads in both countries tout a philosophy of xenophobia, racial and religious bigotry, and an affinity for Nazism, the ideology of American skinheads is more opening anti-Semitic than it is in England. The rock groups with which skinheads in the U.S. identify are mostly British, although there are a few known American skinhead bands. This report describes skinhead activities in Chicago, other Midwest metropolitan areas, and regions including Florida, California, and Texas. Skinheads are regarded by leaders of mainline, older neo-Nazi groups as potential supporters and have been recruited in recent years with some success. Criminal activity associated with skinheads has occurred in nearly all the cities where they have established gangs.
