A brief description of the School/Community Gang Intervention Teams (Team) in the Providence, Rhode Island Police Department is provided.
Abstract
The Team was introduced on November 18, 1992; however, its inception occurred 1 year earlier with the establishment of the "school squad." This publication briefly describes the Team: its objectives, duties and responsibilities, scope, media policy, procedures, and assignments. Each Team consists of six uniformed officers. The Team's objective is to maintain safety and order in and about school properties, to create an atmosphere of cooperation, and to encourage positive relationships between and among the student body, police, and school administration. The Team also gathers intelligence involving matters relative to gang or criminal activity which may have a direct impact on the community. Search and seizure, arrest, media relations, and witness procedures are described briefly.
