Research procedures were based on the nominal group technique (NGT) in which representatives from the military, the political establishment, law enforcement, and the community were selected to identify significant events and trends. The NGT resulted in the identification of 37 events and 26 trends. These events and trends were analyzed, and strategic and transition management plans for the acquisition of military support were developed. The researcher determined that the military probably will be involved in law enforcement activities in response to additional challenges, both natural and man-made, that will likely occur during the next decade. The need to establish command relationships will be important. Differences between military and police organizations must be recognized, and special command relationships must be developed with clear lines of authority. The effective provision of military support to law enforcement will involve identifying key personnel, providing constant training, developing plans and procedures, resolving conflicts, and assigning specific tasks and responsibilities.
