For another list of names, students are to indicate which characters were willing to fight in an unfair fight. Another exercise lists events described in the book in random order. The student is to place the events in chronological order. A cause-and-effect exercise has students matching causes to effects for events in the book. A crossword puzzle assists students in comprehending the gang terminology used in the book. Another exercise helps students understand how one word can have different meanings in various sentence contexts. An exercise on word pairs has students match words with the same meaning and those with opposite meanings. Two other exercises help students understand the nature and effect of prefixes and suffixes. A writing exercise has students commenting on and critiquing various statements and behaviors of story characters. Some suggested project activities in the workbook are a college, a movie poster, a report, an audio tape, a newspaper article, a story, an interview, a report on weapons used by street gangs, and a TV talk show.
