From May 1992 through August 1993, a total of 1,890 correction officer applicants in New York State were processed through the Psychological Screening Program.
Abstract
The psychological screening administered to each correction officer applicant consists of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI), and the Correction Officer Interest Blank. Each officer candidate also has a personal interview with a staff psychologist who reviews the applicant's test scores and writes a report recommending or not recommending the candidate for hire. Psychologically disqualified candidates can appeal the decision to an independent advisory board. Candidates are evaluated on 11 rating dimensions reflective of overall psychological functioning and adjustment. These include interview behavior, interpersonal relationships, employment history, arrest history, motor vehicle violations, military history, MMPI results, IPI results, aggression/violence history, alcohol or drug abuse, and psychiatric history. 3 tables and 1 appendix
