The first step in suppressing and eliminating the growth of gangs is the coordination of local law enforcement, prosecution, probation, community-based organization, education, private sector, and the media. An Anti-Gang Coordinating Committee should be established as the central organizing body that formulates gang policy for gang-affected areas. It will identify local gang problems, formulate and describe goals and objectives to address the identified local gang problems, and identify resources that can be used to meet the described goals and objectives. It will also provide information, antigang strategies, resource allocation recommendations, and references for governmental and community agencies involved in antigang community efforts. Further, it will develop and promulgate methods to evaluate the progress of the described goals. This report outlines five steps for the coordination of local antigang efforts. They are the creation of a coordinating committee, appointing a chairperson, delegating an individual to take minutes of the meeting, networking with other coordinating committees, and establishing a database.
