The information derives from New Jersey Department of Corrections computer files as of December 31, 1991. The statistics on base offenses indicate that 37 percent of the total parolee population had committed violent offenses (including robbery, assault, sexual assault, and homicide) and that the single most common offense type was drug offenses. The race/ethnicity statistics reveal that more than half of the total parolee population was black; whites constituted 24 percent of the parole caseload and Hispanics 18 percent. Regarding age, 95 percent of the parolee population was 21 years or older; of these 36 percent were aged 21-29, and 38 percent were 30-39 years old. The geographical statistics indicate that 43 percent of all offenders were committed from the four major counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic. In fact, Essex County was the commitment county for 17 percent of all parolees statewide while fewer parolees were committed from Hunterdon and Sussex than from any other county.
