Field work was carried out between January and June 1991. The first stage involved interviews with selected staff in six Scottish prisons. This stage was followed up by mailing questionnaires to prison administrators and selected staff. Of the 88 questionnaires sent, 93 percent were returned. The study sought to determine the number and type of physically disabled prisoners, the physical layout of prison buildings, the provision of special equipment, the type of work undertaken by physically disabled prisoners, and staff attitudes toward such prisoners. Study findings identified 87 inmates with physical disabilities in Scottish correctional facilities as of June 1991. They included one wheelchair user, 14 blind or partially sighted inmates, 25 deaf or hearing-impaired inmates, and 47 inmates with other physical disabilities. Many disabled inmates experienced difficulties in getting to and from certain areas of prisons. Further, disabled inmates were not always given the opportunity to participate fully in prison activities. In particular, industrial managers reported difficulties in placing disabled persons in employment, and social work services for inmates with physical disabilities were inadequate. Recommendations to improve prison accessibility and services for Scottish inmates are offered. 32 references and 3 figures
