This orientation manual for senior officers in the patrol division of the Irvine Police Department (California) provides a listing of each task that must be explained or demonstrated by the training sergeant to the new senior officer.
Abstract
For each category of tasks that must be explained or demonstrated, there is a "critical task sign-off" sheet that must be signed by both the training sergeant and the trainee to indicate that each orientation task has been covered. Tasks pertinent to the custodial office are grouped under the topics of orientation (office equipment and operations), files and manuals, and personnel scheduling. Tasks associated with the custodial facility are functional supervision, general segregation, juvenile detention, duration of detention, strip searches, involuntary blood tests, ibars, deaths and injuries in custody, facility emergencies, jail van use, and custody officers/jail alarms. Orientation tasks for field operations are classified as general, reserves, the supervisor unit, specific field operations, mutual aid, police collisions, pursuits, employee injuries, and community resources. Other task categories are forms (press releases, the sergeant's daily activity log, special weapons report, and reviews), field familiarization, department policies, resources, philosophies, use of force, field training officers, use of K9, and communications.
