The Superintendent serves as the commanding officer of the Division and is accountable for staffing Uniformed and Detective Branches to provide law enforcement service to the State. The mission for these two Branches is to promote highway safety, the maintenance of order, the prevention and detection of crime, and the apprehension of violators. The Division is focusing on attaining accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. In March 1993 the Rhode Island State Police announced the formation of a new unit to detect, investigate, and combat the increasing number of financially related white-collar crimes that have been increasing in the State. Progress has already been made in uncovering incidents of public corruption, embezzlement, violations of banking laws, computer and insurance fraud, and many other financially motivated crimes. The Division recently made the transition to .40 caliber semi-automatic firearms, which enables officers to fire more rounds in a shorter period of time, along with easier and quicker reloading methods. With the use of grant funds, the Division was able to purchase and install computer equipment for all Division facilities. More of the system's capabilities will be realized early in the 1994 fiscal year. Statistics address traffic accidents, arrests, miles patrolled, missing persons, recovered stolen vehicles, and motor vehicle pursuits.
