One aspect of violence prevention is to regulate products or commerce that contribute to violent acts. This can be done through recommended gun control laws and regulations and restrictions on the number of alcohol outlets and alcohol advertising. Another step is to impose sanctions for unsafe firearms storage that results in injury, death, or firearms being taken to schools. Other sanctions recommended are spousal rape laws, court- sanctioned counseling programs for perpetrators of domestic violence, extension of the duration of protective orders, the imposition of youth curfews, and repeal of statutes of limitations for incest or sexual abuse of a minor. A third step is to impose taxes on dangerous products and substances, such as alcohol, ammunition, and firearms. Another step is to fund prevention efforts and services, including the removal of financial barriers for victims seeking redress and protection. Other suggested steps are to enlarge and further define professional groups' mandates; enlarge and further define the mandate of government and regulated agencies; require governmental cooperation and coordination; and improve the availability or quality of information on violence, health outcomes, and associated costs. Remaining measures are to improve, expand, or clarify definitions in law and regulations; oppose counterproductive or inappropriate legislative or regulatory proposals; and repeal counterproductive or inappropriate laws.
