The book first examines the nature of "molesting," "incest," and "child sexual abuse." This is followed by a discussion of the factors that lead to a child's being sexually abused. The discussion emphasizes that although the abuser has factors in his/her background that foster the abusive behavior, he/she is still accountable for the abuse. Those who have been abused, on the other hand, are totally innocent, neither causing nor deserving their victimization. Chapters also examine the dynamics of coping with the abuse both as a child and an adult. Coping behaviors are classified as "fight" (rebelliousness that undermines positive development), "flight" (escapist behavior that undermines positive relationships), and "numbing" (shutting off uncomfortable feelings). How these coping behaviors are carried into adulthood are also discussed. Other topics considered are the revelation of the secret of having been molested; the feelings, decisions, and actions survivors must experience in addressing the past so as to move on constructively; how those who care for survivors can help them through their suffering; and the community systems that can aid survivors in their rehabilitation.
