Law-related education (LRE) is designed to teach people about the law and legal institutions by modeling participatory behavior and to give students skills in critical thinking, conflict management, and effective participation, and LRE lessons are presented for teaching elementary students in Illinois public schools about the U.S. Constitution.
Abstract
Ten lessons are presented for the elementary school level that encourage the development of critical thinking and decisionmaking skills and that are designed to prevent juvenile delinquency. Objectives of each lesson are correlated with State goals for learning in Illinois and learning outcomes established for Chicago's public schools. Lesson themes focus on tolerance, government operations, nonviolence, and role models. Lesson plans include information on where each lesson fits appropriately into the study of U.S. history, appropriate classroom visitors and resources to be used with each lesson, and effective teaching strategies (group activities, role playing, jigsaws, surveys, and group research). All lessons are interactive and stress cooperative learning.
