Of the total, 78 percent were new court commitments, 15 percent were returned parole violators, and 7 percent were other admissions. Overall, 34 percent of the 1992 new commitments had committed violent felonies, 45 percent were drug offenders, 14 percent had committed property crimes, 5 percent were coercive crime offenders, and 2 percent were youthful offenders. Forty-two percent of the new court commitments were first felony offenders, 57 percent were second felony offenders, and 1 percent were persistent felony offenders. The average minimum sentence for 1992 new court commitments was 36.3 months, slightly higher for second felony offenders than for first felony offenders. Statistics are also presented on prior adult criminal record, drug commitments, gender, ethnic group, age, region of the State, country of birth, education, and marital status. 15 tables and 1 appendix
