The tables present information on legal history characteristics of new commitment (for example, crime, minimum sentence, prior criminal record) and demographic characteristics (for example, age, sex, ethnic status, county of commitment). Several tables show trends in new court commitments across the years 1989 and 1992. There were 32,229 total admissions to the New York State Department of Correctional Services in calendar year 1992. Of these, 25,155 (78 percent) were new court commitments, 4,697 (15 percent) were returned parole violators, and 2,377 (7 percent) were other admissions. Drug offenders composed 45 percent of new commitments in 1992. Generally, 34 percent of 1992 new commitments were violent felony offender, 14 percent were committed for property crimes, 5 percent for other coercive crimes, and 2 percent were youthful offenders. Forty-two percent of 1992 new court commitments were sentenced as first felony offenders, 57 percent as second felony offenders, and 1 percent as persistent felony offenders. Males made up 92 percent of new court commitments, and females composed 8 percent. White offenders committed to State prison in 1992 were made up of approximately one-third violent felony offenders, one-third property offenders, and the remaining one-third other felony offenders. African-American offenders were approximately one- third violent felony offenders, one-half drug offenders, and the remainder other offenders. Hispanic offenders committed to State prison in 1992 were approximately four-sevenths drug offenders, one-third violent offenders, and the remainder other offenders.
