This volume explains the impacts of maternal crack cocaine use on babies and describes practical policies and strategies that schools and communities can use to address the needs of these children.
Abstract
Individual sections examine the origins of cocaine use, the shift from cocaine to crack, the nature of the current problem, the characteristics of the crack-abusing mother, and the characteristics of the newborn affected by crack. Additional sections detail the impacts of crack on the child's motor development, language development, and behavior. A multidisciplinary community response is recommended that includes professional training and networking, treatment, specialized care of newborns affected by crack, specific strategies for managing infants and preschoolers, and effective school and classroom management strategies for schoolage children.
