The book is based on the authors' belief that if teenagers are to avoid being sexually exploited, abused, or coerced, they need to have enough information to recognize risky situations and develop the skills to resist pressure. They must know ahead of time what to do to avoid or extricate themselves from threatening situations. The information this book provides includes the characteristics of sexual assault, what to do if it happens, the negative and positive aspects of sexuality, assurance that rape is never the fault of the victim, and values that should regulate sexual behavior. Since most rapes are committed by acquaintances of the victims, a number of chapters focus on the nature and prevention of such rapes. Other chapters address the development of self-esteem as a resource for protection, messages and myths about rape communicated through the media, the overcoming of sex role expectations, distinguishing various kinds of touch, and how to avoid abuse in relationships. Other topics considered are rape prevention strategies, family stress as a risk factor, and how parents should respond if their child is sexually assaulted. A 15-item annotated bibliography is provided.
