The introductory chapter presents basic definitions pertinent to the material to be covered and explains psychoactive drugs, tolerance to drugs, addiction, drug interaction, and the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Other chapters discuss illicit drugs in the following categories: stimulants, narcotic drugs of abuse, marijuana, hallucinogens, depressant drugs of abuse, volatile substances, and steroids. A chapter on asset forfeiture explains relevant California law, controlled substances subject to forfeiture, raw materials and equipment subject to forfeiture, containers, records and research products, conveyances, money and things of value, and real property. This chapter advises that a police officer does not have the authority to seize any item. All items seized must be authorized by the District Attorney's Office; the narcotics investigator can provide the conduit to gain this authority.
