The annual report of Cities in Schools (CIS) reflects the organization's focus on developing personal relationships between juveniles and adults, providing a safe environment in which to learn and grow, giving juveniles marketable tools they can use when they graduate, and providing an opportunity for juveniles to give back to their peers and communities.
Abstract
The report notes that 11 percent of young people between 16 and 24 years of age are school dropouts. This percentage includes 29 percent of Hispanic youth, 14 percent of black youths, and 8 percent of white youths. The report also indicates that many school dropouts involve urban youths who come from low-income families. CIS operates programs in many U.S. cities, and students are referred to CIS because they are judged by their teachers and school counselors to be in jeopardy of school failure. CIS stresses community and family involvement in its programs and also works with the Federal Government, the entertainment industry, and private companies to provide youth services. Selected programs offered by the CIS in Washington, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are described. Financial data on CIS revenues and expenditures are tabulated.
