This document contains papers presented at the Applying Psychology to Imprisonment: Young Offenders conference, at which British prison psychologists reported on their work with this subgroup of the prison population.
Abstract
Prison psychologists contribute to the assessment, allocation, monitoring, and behavior training of incarcerated young offenders. The first paper contained here presents background information about offense types, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, gambling, and interactions among these variables in young offenders. This is followed by discussions of young offender classification and its contribution to the management of correctional resources, and the evaluation of cognitive-behavioral interventions with young offenders aimed at preventing recidivism. Four additional papers give examples of current practice in various British Young Offenders Institutions in the areas of anger control training, alcohol abuse treatment, sexual offender assessment, and remand prisoner counseling.
