There are typically three types of gangs: turf- oriented, independent, and ideological. Turf gangs are oriented to and form in a given locale and protect their turf. Most are predominantly Hispanic. Independent gangs usually specialize in a specific criminal activity. These are predominantly motorcycle gangs. Ideological gangs have and operate within a belief system. Such gangs include racially motivated gangs such as the Skinheads, cultists and occultists, and political terrorists. Coinciding with reduced economic prospects for African-Americans, Hispanics, and other working people, gangs have re-emerged in Milwaukee and other small and medium-sized cities across the Midwest. This article profiles the following gangs active in Wisconsin: Folk Nation, Black Gangster Disciples, People Nation, Vice Lords, and Asian gangs.
