This report describes and evaluates the Boys and Girls Clubs of America's Helping Hand program, which was designed to involve youth in training programs that educated club members about the elderly and how to serve them.
Abstract
One program objective was to develop and test program models that engage adolescents in voluntary support services to low-income and minority elderly. The project also involved the publication of a how-to manual and a supplement piece that outlines a planning and implementation process and sample program models for involving youth in advocacy and service initiatives for low-income and minority elderly. Additionally, the project promoted the implementation of community eldercare advocacy and service initiatives by adolescent club members through the dissemination of a how- to manual, magazine and newsletter articles, and presentations at national conferences on youth and aging. This report describes program methodology, program activities, comments of program participants (teens and seniors), and evaluation findings and program outcomes. The findings focus primarily on how to improve program design and implementation for the benefit of other youth agencies planning to start a similar intergenerational program. The report also describes dissemination activities and future actions.
