The book is divided into three parts. The first part contains detailed information on law enforcement at local, municipal, county, State, special district, and Federal levels. Chapters addresses the police role in the criminal justice system, forms of policing in a democracy, and the history of policing. The second part provides an in-depth examination of police work at the municipal level, with chapters focusing on police organization, behavior, and practices and on crime control and police line services (patrol and investigation). The third part discusses issues that represent perennial problems for the police, such as police professionalism, police corruption and misconduct, hazards of police work, the police role in victimless crimes, community interaction, and community policing.
