This resource guide provides family-violence information for the planning and implementation of family- violence prevention programs in Aboriginal communities in Canada.
Abstract
In explaining the nature of family violence, the guide defines child abuse, wife abuse, elder abuse, the abuse of people with disabilities, and Aboriginal family violence. Regarding the latter issue, the author notes that studies suggest family violence is more common in Aboriginal communities than in other Canadian communities. This guide is designed to help service providers in Aboriginal communities meet the growing demand for information on family violence. After answering some common questions about family violence in the Aboriginal community, a spiritual model of recovery appropriate for the Aboriginal culture is presented. The model provides a way in which Aboriginal clients can better understand themselves, others, the environment and the way they live, and how to plan a new way of life. Strategies for healing are then described. They encompass suggestions for how to start, prevention strategies, public awareness, community action and policymaking, the creation of a healthy environment, crisis intervention strategies, and treatment services for victims and abusers. The final section suggests what various elements of the community can do to counter family violence. Suggestions are offered for healing action by victims, children, family members, elders, abusers, service providers, and the community. Service agencies and other resources are listed.
