Chapters in a section on "Comprehensive Health Education for Tomorrow" consider the possibilities for school health education, highlights and milestones of current school health education, and an essential strategy to improve the health and education of Americans. Seven chapters address programmatic issues, among them being instructional planning for health education, the importance of a healthy school environment, and the integration of school counseling and health education programs. Eight chapters on content issues include discussions of personal and social-skill development and alcohol and other drug-use prevention education. The chapter on social-skills development identifies four generic skills that are the key to the development of personal and social competence: decisionmaking skills, communication skills, stress- management skills, and goal-setting skills. The discussion of alcohol and other drug-use prevention education focuses on the scope of the problem, prevention efforts, how to measure success, and strategies with proven success.
