This volume describes the forms and circumstances of adolescent abuse and discusses ways of recognizing and helping abused teens, as well as preventing the abuse of adolescents through the identification of the crucial developmental issues that lead to abusive family relationships.
Abstract
The discussion notes that authorities estimate that more than 1 million children are abused or neglected in the United States each year; adolescents account for as much as 30 percent of all reported cases. The discussion focuses on the causes of adolescent abuse, the factors that trigger violence, the characteristics of abusive parents and families, parental neglect, and the effects of abuse and neglect. Additional chapters explain the signs of abuse, ways to recognize neglect, methods to cope with problems, intervention approaches, and methods of prevention. The text emphasizes the need for both individuals and agency personnel to be aware of adolescent abuse and the ways to prevent, recognize, and address it.
