As a first-year associate with a prestigious Washington, D.C. law firm, the Ms. Nelson was offered, by a more senior associate, the "opportunity" to represent Ted Bundy as a pro bono project. In 1979, Bundy had been sentenced to death for murder. He subsequently received a second death sentence for another murder and was later connected with and confessed to over 30 more murders. At the time she was offered this opportunity, Ms. Nelson was unaware of the notoriety of this case. Also, as she eventually discovered, when she accepted this project, the offering associate had not apprised the managing partners at her firm of the existence of this case. By accepting it, she unwittingly involved the firm in an unsavory million-dollar case that consumed 3 years of her life. In this book, she relates her unsuccessful efforts to keep one of America's most notorious and hated serial killers out of the electric chair. Ultimately, Bundy was executed on January 24, 1989 in Florida. This book includes a look at the many sides of Bundy's personality, many of which the public never saw. In recognition of Ms. Nelson's prodigious albeit unsuccessful efforts, 3 weeks after Bundy's execution, the law firm with which she was associated suggested that she pursue other employment opportunities.
