This supplement contains primarily U.S. Supreme Court decisions issued before the summer recess of the October 1993 term and pertinent to the investigation of crime, prosecution, and adjudication.
Abstract
Court decisions that relate in some way to the investigation of crime address the exclusionary sanction, constitutional doctrines relating to law enforcement conduct, the detention of persons and related searches, and warrantless searches. Other Supreme Court decisions related to criminal investigations pertain to interrogation, confessions, undercover investigations (entrapment), and subpoena power in grand jury investigative functions. Court decisions related to prosecution and adjudication involve the initial appearance and detention, the preliminary examination and the grand jury, the right to a speedy trial, and competency to stand trial. Other decisions related to prosecution and adjudication involve pretrial discovery and disclosure, the right to an impartial trial, joinder and severance of charges and defendants, the adjudication of guilt by plea and by trial, effective assistance of counsel, sentencing, and appeal and collateral attack.
