This is the group leader's manual for a program designed to help students understand dating violence, its causes, the relationship of substance abuse to interpersonal violence, and implications for students' lives.
Abstract
The program, which consists of 40- to 60-minute daily sessions over 5 days, is designed to help juveniles recognize the warning signs in relationships that may become abusive, understand the interpersonal dynamics that perpetuate dating violence, and make choices that will help them to avoid or terminate the relationship and get help. The first session introduces and discusses violence in society, explains violence among acquaintances, and defines and identifies the importance of self-esteem to patterns of interpersonal violence. Session 2 is designed to help students recognize interpersonal violence in everyday situations; understand dating violence; discuss examples of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; identify the presence of one or more of these examples to some degree in their own lives; and explore the relationship of social messages and the level of interpersonal violence. Other sessions address the characteristics of abusers and the cycle of violence, the warning signs of dating violence, the traps that keep people in abusing relationships, and resources for getting help. Materials for the leader include student handouts, objectives, a lesson plan summary, comments for the group leader, the lesson at a glance, and a detailed lesson plan.
