In 1992, homicide was among the 10 leading causes of death in California; during this period, California's 4,092 homicide deaths represented 15.4 percent of all U.S. homicide deaths for a rate of 13.1 per 100,000 population.
Abstract
This rate has increased 22.4 percent from the 1985 homicide rate. Nearly 84 percent of all California homicide deaths occurred among males. Of the total number of California homicide deaths, the most were to victims in the age groups 15 to 24 and 25 to 34. The State's homicide death rates varied greatly among the four primary racial/ethnic groups, being highest among black and lowest among whites. In addition, age-specific homicide rates were higher among black and Hispanic males as compared to white males in nearly every age group. Finally, the distribution of age-specific rates among females was similar to the distribution of rates among males. Data are compared to U.S. homicide data. 1 table, 3 figures, and 7 notes
