Chapters cover the history of alternative sentencing, types and results of alternative sentencing implementation, roles and tasks of probation personnel, overall effectiveness of the alternative sentencing, and potential application to the Dutch criminal justice system, especially for juveniles. Day fines, mediation, restitution/compensation, community service, electronic house arrest, intensive supervision, and boot camps are examined in detail, and their effectiveness is assessed in terms of costs and results. Probation officer tasks and potential role conflicts are addressed. The overall conclusions are that alternative sentencing options, such as intermediate sanctions, day fines, intensive supervision, and community service, should be considered for the Dutch criminal justice system and that a task force should be established to consider how these sanctions would fit into the established Dutch penal system.
