Abstract
The first section reviews principles of correctional administration and examines the evolution of management theory (scientific management, classical school, human relations school, and systems approach) and relates it to correctional management. The second section examines the environment in which correctional facilities operate, focusing on the city, impact of the courts and the media, and the goals and values of system actors. The organizational process involved in correctional management encompasses policy decisionmaking, budgetary analysis, and organizational development. The next section examines issues involved in management, such as motivation, leadership, and the search for excellence. Through organizational control, the manager can assure himself that the organization is attaining its goals effectively and efficiently. Topics of special interest explored here include unit management, privatization, and ethical issues. Chapter references
