About 350 participants organized into panels explored various themes, including urban violence, gang experiences and alternatives, life on the street, drug abuse research, violence causes, and the link between drug abuse and violence. Other panels dealt with the role of government in prevention efforts; violence as a public health issue; and the role of the family, religion, schools, the business community, and community coalitions in reducing drug abuse and violence. Additionally, panels addressed judicial and correctional treatment options, drug demand and supply reduction, public health strategies for minimizing drug abuse and violence, and gun control.
