As the principal litigators for the Federal Government, the 93 U.S. Attorneys investigate and prosecute those who violate Federal laws and also assert and defend the interests of the Federal Government through civil litigation. The Offices of the U.S. Attorneys conduct approximately 95 percent of the Federal criminal prosecutions and 75 percent of the Federal civil litigation handled by the U.S. Justice Department. As of the end of fiscal year 1993, the U.S. Attorneys' offices and the Executive Office for United States Attorneys employed 4,163 attorneys and 4,842 support personnel. The total budget for fiscal year 1993 was $873,681,000. The statistical information presented in this report is presented by the U.S. Attorneys to the centralized computer database maintained by the Executive Office for United States Attorneys Case Management Staff. The data and information are presented in the general categories of personnel, civil and criminal caseload, criminal prosecutions, asset forfeiture litigation, civil litigation, and community liaison programs. The data show that litigation by the U.S. Attorneys' offices increases in volume and complexity each year. The number of cases pending in courts have increased more than 10 percent in the past year, and the number of appeals filed has increased by almost 8 percent.
